IMPACT PROJECT:

Leveling The Performing Field

Offering Opportunity and Access Through Dance

THE NEED: Virginia Beach City Public Schools' Culturally Linguistically Economically Diverse (CLED) gifted and high ability learners face a gap when auditioning to the City’s arts magnet schools or the Governor’s School for the Arts, and thus are unlikely to pursue education or careers in the arts.

THE IMPACT: Establish and fund a pilot program in collaboration with Virginia Beach City Public Schools Gifted Programs and Ballet Virginia through The Excellence Project to offer training/lessons, access to professional dancers, and equipment at four Title 1 public schools. Front-loading the dancer's lexicon, providing formal training, and giving access to professional dancers will allow the CLED gifted and high ability students to be exposed to the prerequisite skills needed to close the gap within the arts: thus, leveling the performing field. If successful, expand this project to other school locations.

MEASURING IMPACT: Increase acceptance rates of Virginia Beach City Public School students enrolled in the Excellence Project to arts magnet schools and the Governor’s School for the Arts. Program launched in October 2023.

IMPACT PROJECT:

Artist Receptions

THE NEED: Virginia Beach’s Public Art Program enhances our city's identity as a community that supports and promotes creative expression.

THE IMPACT: The City of Virginia Beach’s Cultural Affairs Department offers a public exhibition opportunity for serious visual and fine craft artists exhibiting two-dimensional works in the Sandler Center lobbies. Exhibits are rotated on a quarterly basis.

MEASURING IMPACT: Fund and promote quarterly artist receptions at the Sandler Center. Program launched pre-2015.

IMPACT PROJECT:

Stabilizer Grants (Planned)

THE NEED: Sandler Center resident companies have limited access to Operating Funds support.

THE IMPACT: Align with Virginia Beach Arts and Humanities Commission’s program grants to fund Operating Grants.

MEASURING IMPACT: Award grants on an annual basis following Virginia Beach Arts and Humanities Commission funding cycle. Begin awards Spring 2025.

IMPACT PROJECT:

Underserved Communities Grants

THE NEED: There is limited funding in Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads to provide arts-oriented services to individuals classified as low-income or those individuals with a disability.

THE IMPACT: Funding for arts education services for individuals and communities. Primarily funds existing education programs. Open to Sandler Center Resident Companies.

MEASURING IMPACT: Award grants on an annual basis utilizing NAP funding. Program launched in 2019.

In celebration of clearing skies and in anticipation of an even brighter future, the Sandler Center Foundation (SCF) is raising funds to advance children's education through the performing arts and help fund community arts organizations, including great performances at the Sandler Center.
